    Regional Overview

Perth, Western Australia's sunny capital and the world's most isolated major city, offers surprisingly diverse and accessible diving along its 70-kilometer coastline, from the sheltered waters of Rottnest Island to the dramatic limestone reefs of the metropolitan shore. Rottnest Island, approximately 18 kilometers offshore from Fremantle, is Perth's premier diving destination, offering over 20 world-class dive sites around its coastline with pristine coral reefs, dramatic underwater caves, swim-throughs, and abundant marine life including the island's famous quokkas above water and diverse tropical and temperate fish species below. The Rottnest Island Marine Park protects outstanding reef systems including the famous Philip Rock, Parker Point, and the Strickland Bay caves, with water clarity regularly exceeding 20 meters. The Perth metropolitan coastline offers accessible shore diving at the Mettams Pool, Trigg Island, and North Cottesloe reefs, where limestone platforms support diverse marine life including weedy sea dragons, octopus, and schooling fish. The Swan River provides unique estuarine diving with the Black Swan wrecks and the Rockingham dolphins. The Perth Canyon, a submarine canyon off the metropolitan coast, attracts whale sharks and pelagic species during the summer months. Rockingham and the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park, south of Fremantle, offer sheltered bay diving with dolphin encounters, sea lion colonies, and accessible shore diving. Perth's combination of world-class island diving, accessible city-based sites, and outstanding food, wine, and cultural scene makes it one of Australia's most underrated diving destinations. The region is unique for the Leeuwin Current, which brings warm tropical waters southwards, allowing tropical fish and coral to thrive much further south than they otherwise would. This creates a fascinating underwater mix of tropical and temperate species, making every dive a potential surprise for even the most experienced local divers.
