Port Macquarie, located on the mid-north coast of New South Wales at the mouth of the Hastings River, offers a rewarding diving experience centered on the legendary Fish Rock Cave, one of Australia's most spectacular and unique dive sites. Fish Rock, located approximately 12 kilometers offshore from South West Rocks, features an extraordinary cave system that penetrates deep into the volcanic rock formation, with the main cave entrance opening at 10 meters and extending over 50 meters into the island. The cave is adorned with vibrant invertebrate life including soft corals, sponges, and gorgonians, while the exterior walls drop to over 30 meters and are patrolled by grey nurse sharks, wobbegong sharks, and large schools of pelagic fish. The region also offers excellent diving at Green Island, a small rocky outcrop with prolific marine life and regular shark encounters, Black Rock with its dramatic bommie fields and kelp-covered walls, The Pinnacle rising from the sandy bottom to attract pelagic species, and Smoky Cape with its rugged underwater landscape and diverse invertebrate life. Trial Bay Gaol, a historic convict-built structure, provides an unusual combination of cultural heritage and marine life. The waters around Port Macquarie sit in a transition zone between tropical and temperate marine environments, resulting in a diverse mix of species that makes every dive unpredictable and exciting. The Hastings River estuary itself provides sheltered diving and snorkeling opportunities, while the coastal headlands offer dramatic scenery above and below the water.

New South Wales – Port Macquarie

Port Macquarie is accessed via Port Macquarie Airport (PQQ), which receives flights from Sydney via regional carriers, or a scenic drive along the Pacific Highway (approximately 4.5 hours north of Sydney or 7 hours south of Brisbane). South West Rocks, the main departure point for Fish Rock Cave dives, is approximately 40 minutes north of Port Macquarie. Dive operators run trips from South West Rocks and Port Macquarie to the offshore sites, with boat rides of 20-40 minutes depending on the destination. The inshore sites including Trial Bay, Smoky Cape, and the Hastings River estuary are accessible from shore or via short boat trips. The region is also accessible by train via the NSW TrainLink XPT service, with connecting buses to South West Rocks.
