    Site Overview

Flying Fish Cove is the premier shore diving location on Christmas Island and serves as the primary entry point for many visitors. The site is characterized by a shallow reef flat that extends about 50 metres from the shore before dropping off into a dramatic vertical wall that plunges hundreds of metres into the Indian Ocean abyss. The coral health here is extraordinary, with massive plate corals and delicate staghorn formations teeming with reef fish. Because it is sheltered from the prevailing southeasterly trade winds, the cove offers calm, lake-like conditions for much of the year. It is one of the few places in the world where you can gear up at your car, walk 20 metres into the water, and be on a world-class wall dive within minutes. The site is also famous for seasonal whale shark encounters, which often cruise right into the mouth of the cove between November and April. For snorkelers, the shallow reef top provides endless entertainment with turtles, octopus, and vibrant schools of damsels and parrotfish. Whether you are doing a checkout dive or a night dive, Flying Fish Cove never fails to impress with its combination of accessibility and spectacular marine biodiversity. It is truly a world-class site.

    Dive Briefing

"Diving Flying Fish Cove is straightforward but requires attention to the boat ramp activity and the sudden drop-off. Entry is best made from the concrete boat ramp or the small sandy beach adjacent to it. Swim out over the shallow reef flat (approx. 2-5m deep) heading directly away from shore. You will quickly reach the 'drop-off' where the reef transitions from a slope to a vertical wall. For a standard dive, turn left (east) or right (west) and follow the wall at your desired depth. The coral life is most prolific in the 10-20m range, though the wall continues far deeper. Keep an eye out into the blue for pelagics like tuna, barracuda, and occasionally whale sharks or manta rays. On your return, navigate back to the boat ramp area by monitoring the reef top topography. Be cautious of boat traffic when surfacing near the ramp; always use a DSMB if you are drifting away from the immediate shore entry zone. Night diving here is particularly rewarding, as the wall comes alive with crustaceans, sleeping turtles, and hunting moray eels."
