The Salzkammergut is famed for its freshwater fish, above all char, trout and pike from the cold clear lakes, served smoked, grilled or as crisp fried filets. The Salzkammergut is Austria’s most celebrated lakeland, a UNESCO-framed constellation of deep, luminous alpine lakes that has defined the country’s freshwater diving for decades. It rewards everyone from first-open-water students to technical divers hunting deep walls and wrecks.

Upper Austria – Salzkammergut

Fly into Salzburg Airport (SZG) or Vienna (VIE) and drive into the lake district; the Salzkammergut is also reachable by train to Attnang-Puchheim, Sankt Wolfgang and Hallstatt. A rental car gives the most freedom to tour the lakes, many of which have shore entries and village parking.
