Site Overview

Grüner See (Green Lake) is a protected park dive site in Styria, Austria, set among the country’s varied freshwater landscapes. Grüner See is world-famous for a seasonal miracle: spring snowmelt floods a mountain park, submerging benches, bridges, paths and meadows under clear water. The result is a surreal underwater meadow that draws photographers and divers from around the world, unique among Austrian lakes. Because the habitat is extremely fragile, diving has been prohibited here since 2016 to protect the submerged plants and the lake’s ecology. Only rare, strictly controlled scientific permits are granted, so for nearly everyone the site is now a shore-based nature experience rather than a dive. The lake lies in a quiet cirque in Styria and is best visited on the marked trail and viewing platforms around its shore. It stands as a powerful example of dive-site conservation, showing how protecting a place can matter more than diving it. Conditions are typical of Austrian inland water: visibility generally runs from 5 to 12 metres, the current is low and the water temperature ranges between 2 and 15 degrees Celsius depending on season and depth. The marine life is freshwater and centred on lake trout (brown trout), noble crayfish, alpine newt, with the full community described below for those planning a dive.
