Hinterbrühl Seegrotte (Flooded Mine) is a flooded mine dive site in Vienna & Lower Austria, Austria, set among the country’s varied freshwater landscapes. The Seegrotte is a flooded former gypsum mine south of Vienna whose tunnels and vast chambers fill with clear, cold water, a genuinely surreal overhead environment. Most visitors see it on the famous tourist boat tour, but strictly permitted, guided technical dives explore the submerged tunnels and massive man-made caverns. The water is a constant cool temperature year-round and visibility is good but enclosed, so the environment is psychologically intense and unforgiving. Diving here is overhead-environment work: there is no direct ascent, so it requires the correct cave or mine certification, a guide and full redundant equipment. The chambers are enormous and the silence and submerged machinery create an otherworldly experience unlike any open lake in Austria.
