Diving Lünersee

Site Overview

Lünersee is a high altitude lake dive site in Vorarlberg, Austria, set among the country’s varied freshwater landscapes. The Lünersee sits at 1,970 m, a high-altitude lake beneath the Rätikon with a sheer dam wall and spectacular backdrop. It is guided-dives only because of the altitude, cold and remoteness, normally reached by cable car from Brand. The water is clear and cold, holding char and trout and giving a real sense of vertical space on the wall. Altitude certification and a drysuit are essential, and dives are run as controlled expeditions. The mountain setting is among the most dramatic in Austria. It is a serious high-alpine dive for self-sufficient or guided technical divers. Conditions are typical of Austrian inland water: visibility generally runs from 12 to 25 metres, the current is low and the water temperature ranges between 2 and 12 degrees Celsius depending on season and depth. The marine life is freshwater and centred on lake trout (brown trout), arctic char, grayling, with the full community described below for those planning a dive. Because of its technical rating and the need for Tec 40+ / Altitude certification, Lünersee is best approached with the right thermal protection and, where relevant, altitude or overhead training. It is a representative example of why Austrian lake diving, with its cold clarity, submerged forests and wrecks, attracts divers who want something different from tropical reefs.
