Berwyn Wreck – South Coast – Carlisle Bay Marine Park
Site Overview
The Berwyn is a 70-foot vessel with roots in the First World War era, resting in about six metres of water in Carlisle Bay and adding another century of maritime history to the bay's remarkable graveyard of ships. Now reduced to a low, encrusted skeleton of plates and ribs furred with coral and sponges, she is home to a busy community of parrotfish, sergeant majors, morays and inquisitive trunkfish, and her extreme shallowness makes her a relaxed, sunlit dive that beginners and photographers can work slowly and comfortably. A quiet charmer beside the bay's bigger wrecks, the Berwyn lets newer divers explore a genuine old wreck in water barely deeper than a swimming pool. Depths run from about 4 m at the shallowest point to 6 m at the deepest, with most of the dive spent near 5 m. Barbados is the easternmost Caribbean island, sitting where the Atlantic sweeps in to meet the calm Caribbean, and that convergence keeps its waters clear, warm and rich - the sheltered west and south coasts hold healthy reefs and a famed cluster of wrecks, turtles cruise the shallows year-round, and the deeper walls can turn up pelagics and the occasional shark. Conditions around Barbados vary with the season and tide, so confirm the day's plan with your local dive operator before you go
Dive Briefing
“Settle gently onto this shallow little wreck and wander the encrusted remains at your ease - everything sits in four to six metres of calm water, so it is a perfect place to practise trim and buoyancy. Torch the crevices for morays and watch the parrotfish crop the algae-furred plates. Stay high off the sand, mind your fins among the low structure, and keep clear of any snorkellers sharing the site. The divemaster sets the entry, mooring and ascent plan at the briefing - agree buddy signals, DSMB routine and safety-stop depth before you splash, and start the dive slowly to let the reef or wreck come into focus. Run a three-minute safety stop on the ascent, position clear of the boat if there is any drift, and signal your position with a DSMB on the way up. Conditions around Barbados vary with the season and tide, so confirm the day's plan with your local dive operator before you go”

Safety & Hazards
- Very shallow, broken wreckage - mind head and fin contact
- Boat traffic at the mooring - ascend under a DSMB
- Sharp, coral-furred metal edges throughout
- Shares the water with snorkellers and training divers
- Strong sun and warm, flat water on a very shallow dive
Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
A calm, historic shallow wreck for beginners, children on introductory dives and macro photographers who like low, encrusted structure - its six-metre depth makes it one of the most forgiving sites in the bay. Certification level aside, the real entry requirements in Barbados are calm air consumption, reliable buoyancy and a leave-no-trace attitude toward coral and wreck life - honest self-assessment matters more than the card in your wallet. Conditions around Barbados vary with the season and tide, so confirm the day's plan with your local dive operator before you go
For Non-Divers
Non-divers can ride the same boat to snorkel the clear shallows, beach-hop the sheltered west coast or explore Historic Bridgetown, so a dive day here works for the whole travel group. Conditions around Barbados vary with the season and tide, so confirm the day's plan with your local dive operator before you go. As the easternmost Caribbean island, Barbados sits where the Atlantic meets the Caribbean, which keeps its waters clear, warm and rich in both reef and pelagic life
