Folkestone Marine Park – West Coast – Reefs & Walls
Site Overview
Folkestone Marine Park, established in 1981 as Barbados' first protected marine park, is the island's flagship reef reserve - a thriving fringing ecosystem lying just off Holetown beach where a shallow, sunlit garden of hard and soft coral slides away into a genuinely dramatic drop that plunges from nine metres down past sport-diving limits. Because it has been carefully protected for four decades, the coral here is unusually robust and the fish remarkably unafraid, and turtles cruise the reef head to tail as a matter of routine. Divers can choose their own adventure across the park's depth range - an easy, teeming wander over the shallows or a proper wall plunge into the blue - which makes Folkestone the most versatile and consistently rewarding reef dive on the west coast, and an iconic first stop for any Barbados itinerary. Depths run from about 5 m at the shallowest point to 30 m at the deepest, with most of the dive spent near 15 m. Barbados is the easternmost Caribbean island, sitting where the Atlantic sweeps in to meet the calm Caribbean, and that convergence keeps its waters clear, warm and rich - the sheltered west and south coasts hold healthy reefs and a famed cluster of wrecks, turtles cruise the shallows year-round, and the deeper walls can turn up pelagics and the occasional shark.
Dive Briefing
“Start on the shallow fringing garden and ease out toward the drop, watching your depth as the reef steps down toward the wall. Keep your fins off the protected coral and hover high - this is a long-looked-after reserve and the discipline shows in its health. Scan the ledges for morays and the reef face for grazing turtles, then drift back along the top before your safety stop clear of the busy boat traffic off Holetown. The divemaster sets the entry, mooring and ascent plan at the briefing - agree buddy signals, DSMB routine and safety-stop depth before you splash, and start the dive slowly to let the reef or wreck come into focus. Run a three-minute safety stop on the ascent, position clear of the boat if there is any drift, and signal your position with a DSMB on the way up. Conditions around Barbados vary with the season and tide, so confirm the day's plan with your local dive operator before you go”

Safety & Hazards
- The reef drops steeply beyond recreational limits - mind depth and no-deco planning on the wall
- Busy protected park shared with snorkellers, glass-bottom boats and divers - DSMB on ascent
- Fragile fringing coral demands precise buoyancy
- Boat traffic off the Holetown front
- Sun exposure on the shallow protected reef
Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
A superb all-levels dive that scales with confidence - beginners and snorkellers enjoy the shallow protected gardens while advanced divers drop the wall, all within a short hop of Holetown; the reliable turtles make it a favourite for everyone. Certification level aside, the real entry requirements in Barbados are calm air consumption, reliable buoyancy and a leave-no-trace attitude toward coral and wreck life - honest self-assessment matters more than the card in your wallet. Conditions around Barbados vary with the season and tide, so confirm the day's plan with your local dive operator before you go
For Non-Divers
Non-divers can ride the same boat to snorkel the clear shallows, beach-hop the sheltered west coast or explore Historic Bridgetown, so a dive day here works for the whole travel group. Conditions around Barbados vary with the season and tide, so confirm the day's plan with your local dive operator before you go. As the easternmost Caribbean island, Barbados sits where the Atlantic meets the Caribbean, which keeps its waters clear, warm and rich in both reef and pelagic life
