Pieces of Eight – South Coast – Reefs & Other Sites
Site Overview
Pieces of Eight is one of Barbados' most successful artificial-reef projects - a carefully placed constellation of concrete reef modules and structures sunk on the south coast to seed new habitat, now transformed into a lively, fast-colonising maze that punches well above its weight for fish. The blocks have become vertical gardens furred with coral and sponge, honeycombed with morays and octopus and swarming with angelfish, grunts and sergeant majors that gather in the structure's shelter, drawing in the predators that patrol the edges. Named for the old name for pieces of silver, it is a treasure in its own right - a clever, characterful dive that shows restoration ecology working in real time. Depths run from about 10 m at the shallowest point to 18 m at the deepest, with most of the dive spent near 15 m. Barbados is the easternmost Caribbean island, sitting where the Atlantic sweeps in to meet the calm Caribbean, and that convergence keeps its waters clear, warm and rich - the sheltered west and south coasts hold healthy reefs and a famed cluster of wrecks, turtles cruise the shallows year-round, and the deeper walls can turn up pelagics and the occasional shark. Conditions around Barbados vary with the season and tide, so confirm the day's plan with your local dive operator before you go
Dive Briefing
“Weave between the reef modules slowly, watching your gauges and hoses for the awkward edges that can snag a careless diver, and hover high to protect the fresh colonising growth. The fish aggregations build quickly around the structure - hold still and let them swirl in - and the crevices hide morays and octopus worth a soft torch. Keep an eye on the sand between modules where visibility can dip, and mind boat traffic on the ascent. The divemaster sets the entry, mooring and ascent plan at the briefing - agree buddy signals, DSMB routine and safety-stop depth before you splash, and start the dive slowly to let the reef or wreck come into focus. Run a three-minute safety stop on the ascent, position clear of the boat if there is any drift, and signal your position with a DSMB on the way up. Conditions around Barbados vary with the season and tide, so confirm the day's plan with your local dive operator before you go”

Safety & Hazards
- An artificial structure of blocks and modules with awkward edges and entangling crevices
- Fragile colonising coral on the structure demands careful buoyancy
- Boat traffic at the mooring - DSMB on ascent
- Mild current around the modules on a moving tide
- Reduced visibility from silt near the sand between modules
Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
An easy, lively artificial-reef dive for open-water divers and photographers - the mid-depth, current-light modules suit all confident levels, and the fast colonisation makes it a fascinating repeat visit as the habitat matures. Certification level aside, the real entry requirements in Barbados are calm air consumption, reliable buoyancy and a leave-no-trace attitude toward coral and wreck life - honest self-assessment matters more than the card in your wallet. Conditions around Barbados vary with the season and tide, so confirm the day's plan with your local dive operator before you go
For Non-Divers
Non-divers can ride the same boat to snorkel the clear shallows, beach-hop the sheltered west coast or explore Historic Bridgetown, so a dive day here works for the whole travel group. Conditions around Barbados vary with the season and tide, so confirm the day's plan with your local dive operator before you go. As the easternmost Caribbean island, Barbados sits where the Atlantic meets the Caribbean, which keeps its waters clear, warm and rich in both reef and pelagic life
