Abrolhos Marine National Park is Brazil's first and most important marine protected area, located 70 kilometres off the coast of Bahia in the warm South Atlantic waters. The park is famous for its unique chapeirões – enormous mushroom-shaped coral pinnacles found nowhere else on Earth that rise from the seabed creating spectacular underwater towers covered in marine life. These unique formations support the highest coral diversity in the South Atlantic with enormous brain corals, schooling barracuda, groupers, and both hawksbill and green turtles. The park is also the primary breeding ground for humpback whales in the western South Atlantic from August to October, making liveaboard trips during this season extraordinary. The five islands of the Abrolhos archipelago sit atop a vast reef system with deep walls, scattered wrecks including the Rosalinda and Guadiana, and macro havens teeming with seahorses and nudibranchs. Access is primarily by liveaboard from Caravelas or Alcobaça making this a remote, pristine diving destination that rewards the journey with world-class underwater experiences.

Abrolhos Marine Park

Fly to Porto Seguro (BPS) or Teixeira de Freitas airports in southern Bahia, then transfer to Caravelas or Alcobaça port town. Liveaboard boats depart from these ports for the 4-5 hour crossing to the Abrolhos archipelago.
