Rio Grande do Sul's Litoral Gaúcho represents the southernmost diving in Brazil with cold, often murky Atlantic waters that limit recreational opportunities but reward the adventurous few. The Altair cargo ship wreck off Tramandaí is the main attraction, accessible primarily to technical divers given the depth, visibility challenges, and cold water conditions. Freshwater dives in the Mirim Lagoon offer an alternative with unusual limnological environments but virtually no diving infrastructure exists. The subtropical waters of 14-22 degrees Celsius and frequent sediment suspension from the large river systems create challenging conditions that deter most visitors. Despite these limitations, the Litoral Gaúcho holds a special appeal for experienced cold-water divers interested in exploring Brazil's least-visited diving frontier and the unique wreck diving that the few local operators provide.

Fly to Porto Alegre (POA) and drive 2-3 hours east to the coast. Tramandaí is the main base for wreck diving. Torres on the northern border with Santa Catarina offers slightly better conditions. The coast is accessible via the BR-101 and BR-290 highways.
