Site Overview

Perpendicular Wall is Christmas Island signature dive site and widely regarded as one of the most spectacular wall dives in the entire Indian Ocean region. This breathtaking vertical drop-off begins at a remarkably shallow depth of just eight metres and plunges into the abyss far beyond recreational diving limits creating an awe-inspiring underwater cliff face draped in magnificent gorgonian fans, sea whips, and ancient black coral trees. The wall is patrolled by large pelagic species including dogtooth tuna that patrol the edge at high speed, giant trevally hunting in coordinated groups, and grey reef sharks cruising the drop-off with effortless grace. The exceptional visibility regularly exceeding forty metres allows divers to appreciate the full monumental scale of this geological wonder while observing approaching marine life from considerable distance. Frequent spinner dolphin encounters add an extraordinary dimension to the experience as pods play in the current above the wall and their echolocation clicks echo through the water column during the dive. The shallow starting depth of just eight metres means that even the initial section of the wall is spectacular with colourful reef fish, gorgonian fans, and the dramatic vertigo-inducing view into the deep blue below. This multi-level diving paradise allows extended bottom times on the shallower sections while still providing opportunities for deeper exploration of the lower wall where larger species and more dramatic formations await experienced divers.

Dive Briefing

"Descend from the boat at the reef crest and immediately position yourself on the wall edge at fifteen to twenty metres where the pelagic action is most concentrated. Face into the current and scan the blue water for approaching sharks, tuna, and trevally while maintaining your position on the wall with careful buoyancy control. The gorgonian fans and black coral trees provide stunning photographic backdrops against the deep blue water beyond the wall edge. Dogtooth tuna patrol the wall at high speed making dramatic passes within metres of divers while giant trevally hunt in coordinated groups along the reef crest. Grey reef sharks cruise the deeper sections beyond twenty-five metres and are best observed from a stationary position on the wall to avoid startling them. During the safety stop on the shallower sections above fifteen metres, spinner dolphins frequently pass overhead providing unforgettable surface interval entertainment. The wall supports distinct depth zones with different coral communities and associated fish species at each level making multi-level exploration highly rewarding. Use a reef hook if available to conserve air and extend bottom time while watching the pelagic parade unfold before you."
