The Cathedral – North Coast West

Site Overview

The Cathedral is another awe-inspiring cavern system on Christmas Island North Coast featuring towering limestone walls and dramatic light shafts that create an almost spiritual underwater atmosphere. Unlike Thundercliff Cave, The Cathedral is characterised by its immense vertical scale with walls rising from the sandy floor to the ceiling high above creating a sense of being inside a vast natural temple. Resident populations of batfish patrol the chamber with their distinctive silhouettes adding to the otherworldly ambience. Light shafts penetrating through multiple openings in the ceiling create constantly changing patterns of illumination that dance across the cavern walls and floor. The entrance requires advanced skills due to significant surge that can make entry challenging during rougher conditions. Once inside, the chamber is relatively calm and spacious allowing divers to hover weightlessly in the beams of light while observing the batfish and other marine life that call this cavern home. The walls are adorned with gorgonian fans, soft corals, and encrusting organisms that thrive in the sheltered environment. Moray eels and lionfish occupy the darker recesses while trevally occasionally venture into the entrance zone to hunt. The combination of geological grandeur, atmospheric lighting, and unique marine life makes The Cathedral one of the most memorable advanced dive sites on Christmas Island.
