The Pinnacle (Christmas Island Seamount) – Offshore Seamounts

Site Overview

The Pinnacle is a massive seamount rising from the deep ocean floor several kilometres offshore from Christmas Island representing the ultimate frontier of expedition diving in the Indian Ocean. This underwater mountain attracts extraordinary concentrations of pelagic life including schooling scalloped hammerhead sharks that form dramatic silhouettes against the deep blue water, whale sharks during their seasonal migration from November to April, oceanic manta rays gliding along the seamount summit, and occasionally pilot whales passing through the area. The seamount summit provides cleaning stations and feeding areas where large pelagic species congregate creating reliable encounter opportunities for expedition divers. The blue-water diving conditions offer exceptional visibility exceeding fifty metres with the open ocean environment providing unobstructed views of approaching megafauna from considerable distance. Access to this remote site requires liveaboard vessels or specialised expedition charters as the distance from shore makes day-trip diving impractical.
