Site Overview

Winifred Beach offers beautiful shallow coral gardens at depths of just three to fifteen metres making it one of the most accessible and enjoyable dive sites on Christmas Island for divers of all experience levels. The fringing coral reef extends from the beach in a gentle slope featuring healthy hard coral formations including branching staghorn corals, massive brain corals, and colourful plate corals that create a vibrant underwater landscape teeming with tropical fish. Green turtles are regularly encountered throughout the dive either grazing on the reef surface or resting on the sandy patches between coral formations providing excellent photographic opportunities in the clear shallow water. Schools of butterflyfish, surgeonfish, and parrotfish patrol the coral gardens in abundance creating the classic tropical reef scene that makes Winifred Beach perfect for wide-angle underwater photography. The shallow depth and minimal current allow extended bottom times ideal for practising photography techniques, completing training dives, or simply enjoying the relaxing experience of swimming through pristine coral gardens. The beach itself offers pristine white sand and crystal-clear water making it an excellent destination for combined dive and snorkel trips where non-diving companions can enjoy the same marine environment from the surface. The protected bay position ensures calm conditions year-round with visibility typically ranging from fifteen to thirty-five metres depending on weather and seasonal conditions.

Dive Briefing

"Enter the water from the boat or shore entry and descend to the coral gardens at five to eight metres depth. Swim along the reef following the natural contour of the coastline where the coral formations are most diverse and the marine life most abundant. Green turtles are commonly encountered within the first few minutes of the dive either grazing on the reef surface or swimming between coral heads. Schools of butterflyfish and surgeonfish create beautiful compositions against the coral backdrop while parrotfish crunch on coral in the background providing the characteristic sounds of a healthy reef ecosystem. Explore the shallower sections near the beach where juvenile fish congregate among the branching corals and anemonefish colonies occupy their host anemones on the reef flat. The deeper sections at ten to fifteen metres feature larger coral bommies and occasional visits from reef sharks and eagle rays passing along the reef edge. After a thorough exploration of the coral gardens, conduct your safety stop in the shallow water where abundant small reef fish and colourful invertebrates provide interesting observation subjects for the final minutes of your dive."
