Atiu Outer Reef

Atiu’s food is traditional Cook Islands home cooking, centred on ika mata, umu feasts and taro, with island-grown coffee a local specialty. Guesthouses and the occasional small cafe serve fresh fish, cassava and tropical fruit, and visitors are often invited to a family umu. Produce is largely grown on the island, giving meals a true garden-to-table feel.

Atiu is a raised volcanic island south of Rarotonga, known for its makatea (raised coral limestone) cliffs and a relaxed, traditional way of life. Underwater, the Atiu Outer Reef is a relatively unexplored steep wall falling into deep blue water, rich in black coral, sea fans, grey reef sharks and dogtooth tuna, with mantas possible in season. The sheltered Atiu Lagoon holds shallow patch reefs full of macro life, ideal for slow, exploratory shore and boat diving. With limited dive infrastructure, Atiu is for the curious traveller who values untouched reefs over creature comforts. The island is also famous for its Anatakitaki cave tours, coffee plantation and abundant birdlife, making it a rewarding stop for those who venture beyond the main islands.

Atiu is reached by a 40 to 50-minute flight from Rarotonga with Air Rarotonga. There is limited dive infrastructure, so diving is arranged locally and depends on weather and operator availability. The outer reef is a 30-minute boat ride from the island, while the lagoon can be explored by shore or short boat trip. Plan well ahead and treat Atiu as an exploratory destination rather than a scheduled dive resort.
