Mangaia is the southernmost and one of the oldest raised atolls in the Pacific, a makatea island of dramatic limestone cliffs and ancient forts. Underwater, the Mangaia Wall is a steep submerged cliff rarely dived by anyone, falling into deep water with gorgonian-covered walls, schools of trevally and barracuda, whitetip sharks and turtles. The Mangaia Caves offer a unique halocline dive inside limestone caverns where freshwater meets the sea, with stalactites and reclusive macro life. Very few operators visit Mangaia, making it a true expedition destination for advanced divers who plan around a stable weather window. On land, the island’s caves, marae and quiet villages offer a deep connection to Cook Islands heritage.

Mangaia

Mangaia is reached by a roughly one-hour flight from Rarotonga with Air Rarotonga, operating a few times per week. Dive infrastructure is minimal and very few operators visit, so any diving must be planned well in advance and arranged locally. The wall is a 30-minute boat ride, while the caves are closer to shore. Treat Mangaia as an expedition: pick a stable dry-season window and confirm logistics before travelling.
