Penrhyn Lagoon & Passes

On an expedition to Penrhyn, meals are provided by the liveaboard, often featuring fresh catches from the lagoon and open ocean alongside provisioned supplies. The local community eats traditional Cook Islands food such as ika mata, umu and taro when available. Given the atoll’s isolation, fresh provisions are precious and meals are planned carefully.

Penrhyn, also known as Tongareva, is the largest and northernmost atoll in the Cook Islands, a vast ring of reef and islets surrounding a huge lagoon near the equator. Visited only by expedition-style liveaboards, its outer reef walls and passes are pristine, with massive giant clams, schooling sharks, dogtooth tuna, and the open-ocean billfish of sailfish and marlin. Very few visitors ever reach Penrhyn, and its remoteness preserves a reef system of extraordinary health and density. Penrhyn is reached only by expedition-style liveaboard, with no scheduled passenger flights for divers. The atoll is far to the north near the equator, so the supporting vessel handles all logistics, diving and safety. Plan the expedition around a stable dry-season weather window, and ensure the vessel is equipped for remote operations and medical evacuation given the great distance from Rarotonga.
