Beqa Passage – Beqa Lagoon and Pacific Harbour

Site Overview

Beqa Passage is an exhilarating drift dive through the outer barrier reef of Beqa Lagoon, where nutrient-rich oceanic water surges through the channel attracting large pelagic species and dense aggregations of reef fish. The passage cuts through the barrier reef system that encloses Beqa Lagoon, creating strong currents that draw in grey reef sharks, eagle rays, schooling barracuda, giant trevally, and dogtooth tuna from the open ocean. The dive typically begins at the upstream entry point where divers are dropped into the current and carried along the reef wall, watching the action unfold as the current delivers a constant stream of marine life. The passage walls are encrusted with soft corals, gorgonians, and sea fans that thrive in the nutrient-rich flow, while the deeper sections host larger predators patrolling for prey. Schools of barracuda form characteristic circular formations in the current, while giant trevally hunt along the reef edge. Eagle rays glide gracefully through the water column, their wings catching the current. The passage dive is one of the most exciting offerings in the Beqa Lagoon area, providing a contrast to the calm shark reef dives with its adrenaline-pumping drift experience. The current strength varies with tidal conditions, and experienced guides carefully time entries to coincide with optimal flow conditions. Visibility is typically excellent in the passage due to the oceanic water source, often exceeding 30 metres on clear days.
