Black Magic Mountain – Bligh Water and Vatu-i-Ra Passage

Site Overview

Black Magic Mountain is a deep-water pinnacle in Bligh Water that delivers thrilling encounters with hammerhead sharks, silvertip sharks, and schooling big-eye trevally in a dramatic offshore setting that exemplifies the wild beauty of the Vatu-i-Ra Passage. The pinnacle rises from deep water to within 8 metres of the surface, its steep flanks covered in gorgonian sea fans, soft corals, and black coral that create a dark, mysterious underwater mountain landscape. Scalloped hammerheads are the headline attraction, appearing in the blue water particularly from June to September, their distinctive head shapes and schooling behaviour creating unforgettable encounters as they patrol the deeper waters around the pinnacle. Silvertip sharks add to the predator roster, their white-tipped fins and powerful bodies indicating their position as apex predators in the open ocean environment. Grey reef sharks are consistently present, cruising the deeper flanks of the pinnacle with measured purpose. Schooling big-eye trevally form dense aggregations around the pinnacle, their large eyes adapted to the lower light conditions at depth. The current flows around the pinnacle, creating upwellings that concentrate plankton and attract the pelagic species that make this site so exciting. The pinnacle summit supports soft corals and anthias in the shallower, sunlit zone, while the deeper flanks transition to larger gorgonians and black coral adapted to lower light levels. Black Magic Mountain is a liveaboard-exclusive site that rewards experienced divers with some of the most exciting pelagic action available in Fijian waters.
