Carpet Cove – Beqa Lagoon and Pacific Harbour

Site Overview

Carpet Cove is a sheltered dive site within Beqa Lagoon that has earned its name from the extraordinary carpet of soft corals that blankets the reef slope in a kaleidoscope of colours. This site is widely regarded as one of the best macro diving locations in Fiji, offering encounters with cryptic species that reward patient observation and careful searching. Frogfish of various species perch motionless on the soft coral branches, their camouflage making them nearly invisible until a trained eye spots their distinctive shape. Ghost pipefish drift among the gorgonian branches, their transparent bodies revealing internal organs. Pygmy seahorses cling to sea fans, their tiny bodies perfectly adapted to match the polyps of their host. Nudibranchs in dozens of species display brilliant warning colours as they graze on sponges and hydroids across the reef surface. The soft coral coverage at Carpet Cove is exceptional, with Dendronephthya species in shades of purple, orange, pink, and yellow creating a dense garden that pulses with life. Small reef fish including anthias, fairy basslets, and gobies dart among the coral branches, while cleaner shrimp wave their antennae from cleaning stations on the larger coral heads. The sheltered nature of the cove means conditions are consistently calm, making it an ideal site for macro photography where steady positioning and extended bottom time are essential. The shallow depth profile allows for long dives, giving photographers ample time to compose shots and search for elusive subjects. Carpet Cove is often combined with other Beqa Lagoon dives as a relaxing afternoon or training dive.
