Fish Factory – Taveuni and Somosomo Strait

Site Overview

Fish Factory is a high-energy drift dive site in the Somosomo Strait named for the extraordinary density of schooling fish that congregate in the nutrient-rich current, creating swirling tornadoes of fusiliers and snapper that attract grey reef sharks and whitetip reef sharks on active hunting patrols. The site delivers non-stop pelagic action from the moment divers enter the water, with schools of thousands of fusiliers forming tight bait balls that shimmer and flash as individual fish react to the presence of predators. Grey reef sharks cruise through the fish schools with purpose, their streamlined bodies cutting through the swirling masses as they select prey. Whitetip reef sharks join the hunt, working the reef edges where fish seek shelter among the coral structures. Giant trevally add to the predation pressure, making explosive strikes from the periphery of the fish aggregations. The sheer biomass of fish at Fish Factory is remarkable, with the density of schooling fusiliers and snapper sometimes reducing visibility as thousands of bodies fill the water column. The current in the Somosomo Strait delivers nutrients that sustain this extraordinary concentration of marine life, fuelling the food chain from plankton through baitfish to apex predators. The reef itself supports healthy soft and hard coral communities that provide the structural foundation for the fish populations.
