The Great White Wall – Taveuni and Somosomo Strait

Site Overview

The Great White Wall is arguably the most iconic dive site in Fiji and one of the most celebrated walls in the world, a sheer vertical face draped in luminescent white soft corals that glow ethereally in the filtered sunlight penetrating the Somosomo Strait. This legendary wall drops from approximately 15 metres depth to beyond 60 metres, its vertical face completely covered in dense colonies of white Dendronephthya soft corals that pulse rhythmically with the current, creating an almost hypnotic visual effect. The wall is the signature site that earned Fiji its reputation as the soft coral capital of the world, and no diving itinerary in Fiji is complete without experiencing its breathtaking spectacle. Rainbow runners streak past in iridescent flashes of blue and green, their torpedo-shaped bodies built for speed in the strait currents. Barracuda form tight schools on the upstream side, their silver bodies contrasting dramatically against the white coral backdrop. Grey reef sharks patrol the deeper sections of the wall, their dark silhouettes providing striking contrast against the luminescent coral. Dense clouds of anthias in orange and pink hover above the coral branches, adding colour to the predominantly white palette. The wall itself is a geological wonder, a sheer cliff face that has been colonised entirely by soft corals over millennia, creating a living tapestry of extraordinary beauty. The current in the Somosomo Strait brings a constant supply of nutrients that fuel the prolific soft coral growth, but also demands respect from divers who must manage both current and depth simultaneously. The dive is conducted as a drift, with divers dropped at the top of the wall and carried along its length, descending gradually to experience the full depth profile. Visibility is typically excellent, allowing the full majesty of the wall to be appreciated from multiple angles.
