Kansas – Namena Marine Reserve and Lomaiviti Group

Site Overview

Kansas is a dramatic deep vertical wall dive within the Namena Marine Reserve that delivers thrilling pelagic encounters with dogtooth tuna, grey reef sharks, and seasonal manta rays against a backdrop of pristine coral-covered cliffs dropping into the abyss. The wall descends from approximately 8 metres depth to beyond 40 metres, its vertical face covered in dense gorgonian sea fans, soft corals, and hard corals that transition to larger gorgonians and black coral in the deeper, lower-light sections. Dogtooth tuna patrol the wall face with purpose, their torpedo-shaped bodies built for speed as they hunt smaller fish along the reef edge. Grey reef sharks cruise the deeper sections, their dark silhouettes providing dramatic contrast against the blue water. Manta rays visit the wall seasonally from May to August, their massive wingspans gliding along the wall face as they filter plankton from the upwelling current. The wall topography creates a spectacular visual experience, with the vertical cliff face providing a canvas of coral life that changes with depth as light penetration decreases. The shallower sections are bathed in sunlight, supporting colourful soft corals and anthias, while the deeper sections transition to larger gorgonians, black coral, and barrel sponges adapted to lower light levels. Schools of barracuda form tight formations in the current above the wall, adding to the pelagic atmosphere. The current flows along the wall face, bringing nutrients that sustain the coral communities and attract the pelagic visitors. Kansas is one of the more demanding dives in the Namena Reserve due to the depth and current, but rewards experienced divers with some of the most exciting pelagic action available in the Lomaiviti Group.
