Mellow Yellow – Bligh Water and Vatu-i-Ra Passage

Site Overview

Mellow Yellow is a visually stunning wall dive in Bligh Water named for the extraordinary coverage of vivid yellow soft corals that drape the reef face in a continuous carpet of golden colour, creating one of the most distinctive and photogenic underwater landscapes in the Vatu-i-Ra Passage. The wall drops from approximately 5 metres to beyond 28 metres, its face covered predominantly in yellow Dendronephthya soft corals that pulse rhythmically with the moderate current, their polyps extended to capture plankton from the nutrient-rich flow. The intensity of the yellow colouration is remarkable, with the soft corals ranging from bright golden yellow to deeper amber depending on light conditions and polyp extension. Dense clouds of anthias hover above the yellow coral colonies, their orange and pink colours creating a warm-toned palette that wide-angle photographers find irresistible. Pygmy seahorses cling to specific gorgonian species growing among the yellow soft corals, their tiny camouflaged bodies requiring patient searching and experienced guidance to locate. Nudibranchs in numerous species graze on sponges and hydroids throughout the site, their brilliant colours contrasting with the predominantly yellow backdrop. The current flows along the wall face, creating a gentle drift that carries divers past the golden coral gardens at a comfortable pace. The wall topography provides opportunities for both wide-angle photography of the coral-covered wall and macro exploration of the small critters living among the coral branches. Mellow Yellow is a highlight of liveaboard itineraries and is often cited by divers as one of the most visually memorable dives in Bligh Water.
