Plantation Pinnacles – Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands

Site Overview

Plantation Pinnacles is a shallow coral garden site in the Mamanuca Islands that serves as an excellent training dive, refresher site, and family-friendly snorkelling destination with abundant turtles, stingrays, and cuttlefish among healthy hard coral formations. The site consists of several small coral pinnacles rising from a sandy floor at depths of 2 to 15 metres, creating a varied underwater landscape that is easily navigable by divers of all experience levels. Green turtles are frequently encountered grazing on algae-covered coral bommies or gliding gracefully between the pinnacles, their gentle presence making them popular subjects for photography and a delight for younger divers. Stingrays rest on the sandy patches between the coral structures, their flat bodies camouflaged against the sand until disturbed. Cuttlefish cruise the reef edge, their remarkable colour-changing abilities and hypnotic arm movements providing fascinating observation opportunities for naturalists and photographers alike. The hard coral coverage is healthy, with table corals, staghorn thickets, and brain corals creating a complex three-dimensional habitat for diverse reef fish. Butterflyfish in multiple species patrol the coral heads, their presence confirming the reef health. The shallow depth allows natural light to illuminate the entire site, creating vivid colours that make wide-angle photography rewarding even without strobes. Extended bottom times of 60 minutes or more are possible due to the shallow depth, giving divers ample opportunity to explore the pinnacles and observe the rich marine life. Plantation Pinnacles is often the first dive of the day for resort-based dive operations, serving as a check dive and orientation for visiting divers.
