Rainbow Reef – Taveuni and Somosomo Strait

Site Overview

Rainbow Reef is the site that earned Fiji its enduring reputation as the soft coral capital of the world, a spectacular reef slope blanketed in soft corals of every conceivable colour creating an underwater kaleidoscope that defies description. Located in the nutrient-rich Somosomo Strait adjacent to the Great White Wall, Rainbow Reef features soft corals in shades of purple, orange, red, yellow, pink, and white that cover every available surface, their polyps extended into the current to capture plankton. The effect of hundreds of soft coral colonies pulsing rhythmically in the current, each displaying its own vivid colouration, is one of the most visually overwhelming experiences available to a scuba diver. Dense clouds of anthias in brilliant orange and purple surround the coral formations, their constant movement creating a shimmering veil of colour that shifts and reforms around the reef structures. Nudibranchs are abundant throughout the site, with dozens of species grazing on sponges and hydroids among the soft coral branches. Pygmy seahorses cling to specific gorgonian species, their tiny bodies perfectly camouflaged to match the polyps of their host. Ghost pipefish drift among the coral branches, their transparent bodies revealing internal anatomy. The reef slope drops from approximately 5 metres at the crest to 35 metres at the base, providing a range of depth options for different portions of the dive. The current in the Somosomo Strait delivers a constant supply of nutrients that sustain the extraordinary coral growth, while also requiring divers to maintain awareness of their position and drift speed. Rainbow Reef is consistently rated among the top dive sites in the world for soft coral diversity and visual impact.
