Site Overview

The Sawai Wreck is a compact vessel resting on a sandy slope within Beqa Lagoon at depths of 8 to 22 metres, offering an easy, atmospheric wreck dive that pairs the mystery of a sunken ship with the colourful marine life of a mature artificial reef. The hull has settled upright on the lagoon floor, its decks and railings now draped in soft corals and sponges that have turned the steel into a thriving habitat. Glassfish swarm through the open doorways and cargo areas, their translucent bodies catching torchlight as divers peer inside. Lionfish perch along the railings and deck fittings, their fins spreading in silent display, while groupers lurk in the larger shadowed openings and emerge to watch divers pass. Batfish circle the exterior in small groups, their disc-shaped bodies silhouetted against the blue water beyond the wreck. The surrounding sand hosts garden eels that retract in unison as a diver approaches, and occasional blue-spotted stingrays settle into the sediment. Because the wreck is smaller and shallower than the other Beqa wrecks, it is an ideal first wreck dive or a relaxed second dive of the day, with generous no-stop time and a forgiving environment. The structure is straightforward to navigate externally, and the protected lagoon location means conditions are calm and predictable. For photographers, the Sawai Wreck delivers both wide-angle silhouettes of the hull and macro opportunities among the encrusting life.

"Divers make a controlled descent from the boat to the wreck, which is visible from the surface on clear days. The highest point of the structure sits at about 8 metres, with the keel resting near 22 metres on the sand. The dive begins with a circuit of the exterior, observing the coral and sponge colonisation and the fish that shelter among the fittings. Glassfish boil from the openings as divers approach, and groupers occupy the larger shadowed doorways. The deck provides easy swimming past the wheelhouse and railings, all softened by encrusting life. Penetration of the interior is possible through the open entry points, but requires appropriate training and a torch, and silt can reduce visibility quickly so slow finning is essential. The sandy bottom around the wreck holds garden eels and the occasional resting ray. The dive concludes with a safety stop above the wreck or on the mooring line, leaving plenty of no-stop time thanks to the shallow profile."
