The Whales Tooth – Bligh Water and Vatu-i-Ra Passage

Site Overview

The Whales Tooth is an adrenaline-pumping drift dive in Bligh Water where strong currents carry divers along a reef slope that serves as a pelagic highway, attracting dogtooth tuna, wahoo, occasional sailfish, and giant trevally in a display of open-ocean predatory action. The site is named for its position near a distinctive rock formation resembling a whale tooth that protrudes from the water surface, serving as a navigation marker for boats and a reference point for divers being carried by the current. The reef slope is relatively featureless compared to the coral-rich pinnacles nearby, but it is the pelagic action that draws divers to this exposed stretch of water. Dogtooth tuna patrol the reef edge with predatory intensity, their torpedo-shaped bodies built for explosive speed as they strike at smaller fish. Wahoo add to the pelagic roster, their long streamlined bodies and razor-sharp teeth identifying them as one of the fastest fish in the ocean. Sailfish occasionally appear, their distinctive dorsal fins and spear-like bills creating one of the most iconic silhouettes in marine life. Giant trevally hunt along the reef slope, making powerful strikes into baitfish aggregations. The current is the defining feature of this dive, with speeds ranging from one to three knots depending on tidal conditions. The drift typically covers several hundred metres of reef slope over 40 to 50 minutes, with the guide managing the group position for optimal pelagic viewing. The liveaboard format provides the best access, with boats positioning upstream for drop-off and following the group downstream for pickup.
