Vatu-I-Ra Reef – Bligh Water and Vatu-i-Ra Passage

Site Overview

Vatu-I-Ra Reef is the signature dive site of Bligh Water, a massive pinnacle rising from deep water in the centre of the Vatu-i-Ra Passage that acts as a magnet for pelagic life from the surrounding ocean. This extraordinary underwater seamount rises from depths exceeding 35 metres to within 5 metres of the surface, creating a vertical column of coral-encrusted rock that attracts an incredible diversity of large marine animals. Grey reef sharks patrol the deeper flanks in small groups, their streamlined bodies designed for efficient cruising in the nutrient-rich current. Schooling barracuda form tight formations on the upstream side, their silver bodies creating a shimmering curtain that parts as larger predators pass through. Giant jacks and schooling snapper swirl around the pinnacle in dense aggregations that attract the attention of hunting pelagics. Manta rays visit the pinnacle seasonally from May to August, their massive wingspans gliding gracefully around the structure as they filter plankton from the upwelling current. Whale sharks occasionally pass through from June to August, their enormous filter-feeding bodies dwarfing the surrounding reef fish as they cruise slowly through the plankton-rich waters. The pinnacle itself is covered in hard and soft corals that thrive in the nutrient-rich current, with the summit supporting colourful soft corals in sunlight and the deeper flanks hosting larger gorgonians and black coral. The biodiversity concentrated around this single structure is remarkable, reflecting the health of the Vatu-i-Ra Conservation Park that protects the area. Vatu-I-Ra Reef is best experienced from a liveaboard, which provides multiple dives at the site and allows divers to observe the changing marine life activity throughout the day.
