Vuaqava is one of the most remote and mysterious dive destinations in the Lau Group, a small coral island with an extraordinary lagoon system that features underwater cave networks, pristine coral gardens, and marine life that has flourished in isolation for centuries. The island sits in the southern Lau archipelago, far from any major population centre, and its lagoon is partially enclosed by a fringing reef that creates a sheltered aquatic sanctuary teeming with life. The headline attraction at Vuaqava is the network of underwater caves and caverns that penetrate the limestone base of the island, creating dramatic overhead environments where shafts of light filter through narrow openings to illuminate the crystal-clear water within. Nurse sharks rest on the sandy floors of the larger caverns, their docile nature allowing close observation in the ethereal half-light. Green turtles use the lagoon as a nursery area, with juveniles frequently spotted among the seagrass beds and shallow coral patches. The outer reef that protects the lagoon is equally impressive, featuring walls draped in pristine corals and patrolled by reef sharks and giant groupers that have grown large in the absence of fishing pressure. Moray eels of multiple species inhabit the reef crevices, with some individuals reaching impressive sizes in this productive environment. Spiny lobsters cluster in the deeper cave sections, their long antennae sensing the currents for food particles.
