Waya Island – Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands

Site Overview

Waya Island is the northernmost major island in the Yasawa chain, offering wall diving with large gorgonian sea fans, pelagic encounters, and excellent macro life in a remote setting that sees fewer divers than the more accessible Mamanuca sites. The island walls drop from approximately 5 metres to beyond 30 metres, their faces covered in dense gorgonian sea fans that extend into the current like underwater trees. Grey reef sharks patrol the deeper sections, while dogtooth tuna make occasional high-speed passes through the blue water during the peak season from June to August. The shallower sections of the wall support soft corals in vibrant colours and abundant reef fish communities. The macro life at Waya Island is a pleasant surprise, with nudibranchs, shrimp, and small fish inhabiting the gorgonian branches and coral crevices, rewarding divers who take time to observe the details. The remote location means that fish populations are less disturbed by diving activity, and marine life approaches divers with less caution than at more frequently visited sites. The current flows along the wall face, bringing nutrients that sustain the gorgonian growth and attract pelagic visitors. The drift dive format allows divers to cover a large area of wall while observing both the macro details and the wider pelagic picture. Waya Island is best accessed from resorts in the northern Yasawa chain or from liveaboards that include the northern islands in their itineraries. The site provides a sense of remote diving that is increasingly rare in popular destinations.
