Diving Fort Boyard

Site Overview

Fort Boyard is a reef and artificial dive site in Atlantic Coast, France, reached from the base town of Ile d’Aix. Fort Boyard is the famous maritime fortress between Ile d’Aix and Ile d’Oléron, ringed by a rocky reef. Diving is outside the fort on the surrounding reef, where conger eels, lobsters and pollack hide in the rocks. The site reaches a maximum depth of 16 m with an average profile around 10 m and a shallow start near 4 m, which places it firmly in the intermediate category and means divers should hold at least an Open Water certification. Conditions are typical of the French coastal coast: visibility generally runs from 8 to 18 metres, the current is strong, and the water temperature ranges between 12 and 19 degrees Celsius with moderate surge exposure.
