Rangiroa is the largest atoll in French Polynesia and the second largest in the world, a vast ring of coral enclosing a lagoon so large it has its own weather system. The atoll is world-famous for its two main passes, Tiputa and Avatoru, which channel massive volumes of tidal water creating some of the most exhilarating drift dives on the planet. Tiputa Pass is the headline attraction, where divers hook into the reef to watch the famous wall of sharks as hundreds of grey reef sharks stack up against the incoming current. Silvertip sharks and great hammerheads join the action from December to March, while wild bottlenose dolphins regularly bow-ride the current alongside divers, creating one of the most joyful underwater encounters in nature. Eagle rays, tuna, marlin, and sailfish complete the pelagic spectacle. Avatoru Pass delivers similar high-adrenaline drift diving with massive schools of barracuda, dogtooth tuna, manta rays, and dolphins, with whale sharks possible from November to April. Within the lagoon, the Aquarium site provides calm coral bommies ideal for training, while Les Sables Roses offers unique pink coral sand environments with macro critters and garden eels. The Cavernes de Tiputa feature coral-lined swim-throughs with glassfish swarms, nurse sharks, and lobsters. Rangiroa has excellent dive infrastructure with multiple professional operators, comfortable accommodation ranging from pensions to upscale resorts, and a well-established liveaboard scene.
