Site Overview

The Cavernes de Tiputa are a series of coral-lined swim-through passages and cavern formations located near the famous Tiputa Pass entrance on Rangiroa, offering divers a fascinating underground experience where massive schools of glassfish create spectacular light displays in the torch-illuminated chambers. The cave system has been carved by centuries of water movement through the coral limestone substrate of the atoll rim, creating smooth-walled passages and spacious chambers that are safe for certified divers to explore with proper lighting and buoyancy skills. Glassfish schools fill the cave interiors with thousands of translucent bodies that catch and refract torch light in mesmerising displays of bioluminescence and shadow that create some of the most dramatic underwater photography opportunities available in the Tuamotu archipelago. Nurse sharks are regular residents of the larger cave chambers, resting on the sandy floors with their massive bodies and distinctive barbels creating an impressive but non-threatening presence in the dim cave environment. Lobsters of various species inhabit the darker recesses and crevices throughout the cave system, their long antennae extending into the water column as they sense vibrations from potential food sources in the low-light environment. The cave walls are decorated with colourful sponges, tunicates, and coral formations that thrive in the reduced light conditions, creating living tapestries of orange, yellow, and purple that contrast beautifully with the pale limestone substrate.

"Descend from the boat near the pass entrance and swim to the cave openings that are visible as dark entrances in the coral limestone rock face near the Tiputa Pass area. Your guide will lead the group into the first chamber where torch light reveals the spectacular school of glassfish that fills the cavern with thousands of translucent bodies refracting light in every direction. Nurse sharks rest on the sandy floor of the larger chambers, their massive bodies and gentle nature making them fascinating subjects for observation and photography in the atmospheric cave environment. Lobsters are abundant in the crevices and darker recesses, their long antennae and compound eyes perfectly adapted to the low-light conditions of the cave interior. The cave walls are covered in colourful filter-feeding organisms that create spectacular displays when illuminated by your torch beam, with sponges and tunicates in vibrant oranges and purples against the pale limestone. Your guide will choose which passages and chambers to explore based on the group's comfort level and the conditions inside each formation. Exit the caves and ascend along the reef slope, enjoying the coral communities and fish life in the sunlight before your safety stop."
