Fare Piti is Huahine's premier macro diving destination, offering patient observers and underwater photographers the opportunity to discover an extraordinary world of tiny marine creatures hidden among the coral rubble and sand patches of this calm lagoon environment. The site is renowned among serious macro enthusiasts for its reliable populations of seahorses that cling to seagrass and coral branches with their prehensile tails, their camouflaged bodies swaying gently with the water movement as they ambush tiny crustacean prey with their remarkable suction-feeding technique. Ghost pipefish are another signature species at Fare Piti, their delicate translucent bodies drifting among the coral rubble with an ethereal grace that makes them one of the most photographed subjects in the tropical marine environment. The site supports an exceptional diversity of nudibranch species, with colourful sea slugs in every imaginable pattern and hue crawling across the substrate as they feed on sponges and other invertebrate organisms with their specialised radula mouthparts. Frogfish of various colours and sizes inhabit the coral bommies, their remarkable camouflage and lightning-fast strike technique making them fascinating subjects for observation and photography. "Descend from the boat to the shallow lagoon floor and immediately slow your pace to match the scale of the creatures you are searching for. Seahorses are typically found clinging to seagrass blades or coral branches at depths of three to eight metres, their camouflaged bodies requiring patient searching and careful observation to distinguish from the surrounding substrate. Ghost pipefish drift among the coral rubble patches with their delicate translucent bodies, often appearing to hover motionless in the water column before executing their graceful movements. Nudibranchs are scattered throughout the site on various substrate types, with different species associated with different food sources that your guide can help identify. Frogfish are masters of disguise on the coral bommies, their lumpy bodies and modified fins allowing them to resemble pieces of coral or sponge until they reveal themselves with a sudden strike at passing prey. The shallow depth allows extremely long bottom times for thorough searching and careful photography of each subject encountered. Move slowly and deliberately to avoid disturbing the delicate creatures and to maximise your chances of spotting the most cryptic species."
