Hakatea Bay (Daniel's Bay) – Nuku Hiva (Marquesas)

Site Overview

Hakatea Bay, also known as Daniel's Bay, is a dramatic wall diving site on Nuku Hiva featuring massive volcanic boulders that create an impressive underwater landscape of towering rock formations and deep crevices supporting diverse marine life in the remote Marquesas Islands. The bay's volcanic geology has created enormous boulders that have tumbled from the cliff faces above, forming an underwater labyrinth of massive rocks balanced against each other that creates unique habitats in the spaces between and beneath the formations. Schools of jacks form dense aggregations in the blue water adjacent to the boulder walls, their silver bodies creating shimmering curtains that pulse and reform as they hunt smaller fish concentrated by the current around the rock formations. Green turtles are regular visitors to the bay, gliding gracefully along the boulder walls as they graze on algae and occasionally resting on ledges formed by the stacked volcanic rocks. The visibility can be variable depending on ocean conditions and recent rainfall, adding an element of adventure to each dive as the boulder formations emerge from and disappear into the blue-green water in dramatic ways. Pelagic fish species visit the bay regularly, attracted by the nutrient-rich water and the abundance of bait fish concentrated around the boulder formations. The remote Marquesas location means that the marine life at Hakatea Bay remains largely undisturbed by diving pressure, creating authentic encounters with wild animals in their natural volcanic island habitat.
