Les Sables Roses (Pink Sand Beach) – Rangiroa (Tuamotu)

Site Overview

Les Sables Roses is a unique dive and snorkel site on Rangiroa where the pink coral sand creates a surreal underwater landscape unlike any other diving environment in French Polynesia or perhaps anywhere else in the tropical Pacific. The pink colouration of the sand comes from crushed coral fragments mixed with the shells of tiny pink foraminifera organisms that live on the coral reef and accumulate on the sand flats over thousands of years, creating a substrate that glows with a distinctive rosy hue when illuminated by the tropical sunlight filtering through the shallow water. Garden eels are the signature species at this site, with hundreds of individuals extending from their burrows in the pink sand like living flowers swaying in an underwater breeze as they capture plankton carried by the gentle water movement. Stingrays patrol the sand flats with their broad wings gliding elegantly across the pink substrate, their camouflaged bodies blending perfectly with the sandy bottom until they reveal themselves with graceful wingbeats. The macro life on the pink sand is surprisingly diverse, with nudibranchs, flatworms, and various shrimp species crawling across the distinctive coloured substrate where their contrasting body colours create excellent photographic subjects. The site offers a completely different aesthetic from the coral reef and pass dives that dominate the Rangiroa experience, providing divers with a unique perspective on the diversity of marine habitats available within the massive atoll lagoon system.
