Site Overview

Mahararepa Drift is Tikehau's premier outer reef drift diving experience, offering advanced divers an exhilarating journey along the exposed ocean-facing reef where powerful currents bring nutrient-rich water that attracts the full spectrum of pelagic life to this productive section of the atoll rim. Dogtooth tuna patrol the deeper sections of the outer reef with their explosive speed and power, launching high-speed attacks on schooling fish that create dramatic feeding events visible from considerable distance in the clear ocean water. Schools of barracuda form massive aggregations along the reef edge, their silver bodies aligned with the current as they wait for feeding opportunities created by the concentration of smaller fish along the productive outer reef wall. Dolphins frequently accompany the drift along the outer reef, their playful acrobatics and curious behaviour adding an element of pure joy to the already spectacular pelagic encounters that define this world-class drift experience. Whale shark sightings occur seasonally when plankton concentrations along the outer reef reach levels sufficient to attract these gentle giants to the area where they can be observed filter-feeding with their enormous mouths agape in the blue water beyond the reef edge. Grey reef sharks and eagle rays make regular appearances along the reef edge, adding to the diversity of large marine encounters available during a single drift along this productive section of Tikehau's outer barrier reef system.
