Mahararepa Drift – Tikehau (Tuamotu)
Site Overview
Mahararepa Drift is Tikehau's premier outer reef drift diving experience, offering advanced divers an exhilarating journey along the exposed ocean-facing reef where powerful currents bring nutrient-rich water that attracts the full spectrum of pelagic life to this productive section of the atoll rim. Dogtooth tuna patrol the deeper sections of the outer reef with their explosive speed and power, launching high-speed attacks on schooling fish that create dramatic feeding events visible from considerable distance in the clear ocean water. Schools of barracuda form massive aggregations along the reef edge, their silver bodies aligned with the current as they wait for feeding opportunities created by the concentration of smaller fish along the productive outer reef wall. Dolphins frequently accompany the drift along the outer reef, their playful acrobatics and curious behaviour adding an element of pure joy to the already spectacular pelagic encounters that define this world-class drift experience. Whale shark sightings occur seasonally when plankton concentrations along the outer reef reach levels sufficient to attract these gentle giants to the area where they can be observed filter-feeding with their enormous mouths agape in the blue water beyond the reef edge. Grey reef sharks and eagle rays make regular appearances along the reef edge, adding to the diversity of large marine encounters available during a single drift along this productive section of Tikehau's outer barrier reef system.
Dive Briefing
"Enter the water at the upcurrent end of the outer reef and allow the ocean current to carry you along the reef edge while your guide positions the group for optimal pelagic encounters. Dogtooth tuna appear almost immediately, their powerful torpedo-shaped bodies patrolling the deeper sections with their characteristic predatory efficiency. Schools of barracuda form their characteristic aggregations along the reef edge, creating shimmering curtains of silver that provide spectacular wide-angle photographic compositions against the blue water. Dolphins frequently join the drift, surfing the current alongside divers and performing playful acrobatic displays that create unforgettable memories during this already exciting pelagic experience. Whale sharks are possible during the plankton-rich months, their enormous spotted bodies creating an extraordinary sight as they feed near the reef edge. Grey reef sharks and eagle rays add to the pelagic diversity as they patrol the reef edge in search of prey. Your guide will monitor current strength and group position throughout the drift, deploying DSMBs at the designated exit point for safe boat pickup beyond the reef."

Safety & Hazards
- Strong currents on the outer reef can be unpredictable
- Whale shark encounters require strict approach protocols
- DSMB essential for surface visibility
- Depth management critical on the outer reef
- Variable visibility depending on plankton concentration
Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
Mahararepa Drift is designed for advanced divers with drift diving experience who want high-energy pelagic encounters including dogtooth tuna, dolphins, and seasonal whale sharks on the exposed outer reef. Experienced photographers with good current management skills will capture spectacular wide-angle images of schooling fish and visiting megafauna against the dramatic outer reef landscape. The site demands excellent buoyancy control and comfort in open water conditions with strong currents. The combination of reliable pelagic encounters and dramatic outer reef scenery makes this drift an essential complement to the manta and lagoon dives that dominate the Tikehau diving experience.
