Makatea Island is one of the most spectacular and unique dive destinations in French Polynesia, featuring an uplifted coral island that rises dramatically from the ocean floor creating sheer vertical walls that plunge into the deep blue waters surrounding this geological wonder. The island's uplifted coral limestone has created towering cliff faces both above and below water, with the underwater portions forming some of the most dramatic wall diving available anywhere in the South Pacific where vertical drop-offs extend from shallow reef flats into depths beyond recreational diving limits. Grey reef sharks patrol the base of the walls with their characteristic steady cruising movements, their sleek silhouettes visible against the vertical limestone backdrop that creates a unique aesthetic unlike any other dive site in the region.
