Manta Point (Taha'a) – Raiatea & Taha'a (Society Islands)

Site Overview

Manta Point off Taha'a is a seasonal cleaning station on the outer reef where reef manta rays gather to take advantage of the cleaning services provided by small wrasse and other cleaner fish species in one of the most beautiful settings in French Polynesia. The site is located on a coral slope adjacent to the outer reef edge where ocean currents bring nutrient-rich water that supports both the plankton feeding habits of the mantas and the diverse reef ecosystem that surrounds the cleaning station. During the peak season, multiple manta rays can be observed simultaneously at the cleaning station, their enormous wingspans of three to four metres creating breathtaking silhouettes as they hover motionless above the coral bommies while tiny cleaner wrasse attend to their needs by removing parasites and dead skin. Grey reef sharks are consistently present at the site, patrolling the deeper sections of the reef slope with their characteristic steady cruising movements that add an extra dimension of excitement to the manta ray encounters. Eagle rays make regular appearances in the blue water beyond the reef edge, their distinctive silhouettes providing additional photographic opportunities for wide-angle shooters capturing the full spectrum of ray species in a single dive. The cleaning station itself is a fascinating example of symbiotic behaviour in the marine environment, where the mutual benefits between the mantas and the cleaner fish create a reliable and predictable interaction that divers can observe without disturbing the natural process.
