Site Overview

Muri Beach on Huahine, locally known as The Aquarium, is a charming shore-accessible dive site that offers a gentle introduction to the rich coral reef ecosystems of French Polynesia in a comfortable and accessible setting. The site features extensive coral gardens growing on the shallow reef flat adjacent to the beach, creating a thriving underwater community that supports an impressive diversity of tropical fish and invertebrate species within easy swimming distance from shore. Giant clams are the signature species at this site, with several large specimens embedded in the coral substrate displaying their magnificent iridescent mantles in shades of blue, green, and purple that shimmer in the tropical sunlight filtering through the shallow water. Multiple anemonefish colonies dot the reef in colourful patches, their host anemones providing shelter and nursery grounds for these beloved reef residents and their developing offspring. Parrotfish of various species graze continuously on the coral substrate, their powerful beak-like mouths crunching through calcium carbonate as they process algae and contribute to the sand production that maintains the beautiful beach above. The site's shore access and gentle conditions make it particularly valuable for dive centres conducting training courses, for families with young children learning to snorkel, and for divers who prefer the convenience of entering the water directly from the beach rather than requiring a boat transfer.

Dive Briefing

"Enter the water from the beach and swim out over the shallow reef flat where the coral gardens begin just a few metres from shore. The giant clams are scattered throughout the site and are easily located by their large size and distinctive iridescent mantles that glow in the sunlight penetrating the shallow water. Anemonefish colonies are abundant on the coral bommies, with multiple species hosting their vibrant anemones in various colours from deep purple to bright orange. Parrotfish graze audibly on the coral substrate, their crunching sounds carrying through the water as they perform their important ecological role in maintaining the reef ecosystem. Green turtles visit the site regularly to feed on seagrass and algae, often allowing patient observers to approach within a few metres for excellent viewing and photography opportunities. The shallow depth means extended bottom times are possible, allowing thorough exploration of the various coral bommies and their associated fish communities. Exit the water at the same beach entry point, taking care to avoid stepping on coral or sea urchins during the shore exit."
