Murimur – Bora Bora (Society Islands)

Site Overview

Murimur is Bora Bora's premier drift diving experience, offering advanced divers an adrenaline-fuelled journey through one of the most productive passes in the Society Islands where strong ocean currents funnel nutrient-rich water into the lagoon system. The pass creates a natural highway for pelagic species that ride the currents through the gap in the barrier reef, with grey reef sharks forming hunting packs that patrol the edges of the channel with their characteristic steady cruising movements. Schools of barracuda form massive aggregations that stretch across the width of the pass, their streamlined silver bodies aligned with the current as they wait for prey items to be swept past by the relentless flow. Eagle rays bank and turn in the current with their broad wings acting like aircraft control surfaces, their graceful movements creating some of the most photogenic scenes available in French Polynesian diving. The current strength varies throughout the tidal cycle, with the incoming tide typically bringing the clearest water and the most active pelagic encounters as the ocean water pushes through the narrow pass entrance. Dogtooth tuna and other large predatory fish use the current to their advantage, launching high-speed attacks on schooling fish that struggle against the flow. The dramatic underwater landscape of the pass itself features rocky walls on either side that funnel the current and create eddies where fish can rest between surges of water.
