Site Overview

Onoiau Pass is Maupiti's spectacular ocean gateway and one of the most pristine and exciting pass dives in the Society Islands, offering advanced divers the opportunity to experience a virtually untouched marine ecosystem where powerful tidal currents funnel nutrient-rich ocean water through a deep channel flanked by healthy coral walls. The pass is renowned for its seasonal manta ray encounters, with multiple individuals gathering at cleaning stations near the pass entrance where they perform their graceful aerial manoeuvres above the coral substrate while small cleaner fish attend to their needs. Grey reef sharks are consistently present in impressive numbers, forming hunting packs that patrol the deeper sections of the pass with their characteristic fluid movements that command respect in this remote environment far from any urban centre. Hammerhead sharks make seasonal appearances in the pass, their distinctive cephalofoil heads creating unmistakable silhouettes as they school in the deeper blue water beyond the pass walls. The pristine coral communities lining the pass walls include massive gorgonian fans, black coral colonies, and extensive hard coral formations that have developed undisturbed for decades in this low-impact environment. Dogtooth tuna and other large pelagic species use the pass as a hunting corridor, their explosive speed and power on display as they target schooling fish concentrated by the strong currents.

Dive Briefing

"Enter the water at the ocean entrance of the pass and immediately feel the power of the tidal current pulling you through the deep channel between the coral walls. Descend to the recommended depth and allow the current to carry you through the pass while your guide positions the group along the deeper edge where pelagic encounters are most frequent. Grey reef sharks appear almost immediately, cruising in small hunting groups along the pass walls with their characteristic steady movements. Manta rays may appear from the blue water during seasonal periods, their massive wingspans creating breathtaking silhouettes as they approach the cleaning station near the pass entrance. Hammerhead schools may be visible in the deeper blue water, their distinctive silhouettes unmistakable against the ocean backdrop. The pristine coral walls are covered in gorgonian fans and black corals that extend into the current, creating a spectacular garden of filter-feeding organisms. Your guide will monitor current strength and group cohesion throughout the drift, choosing the exit point based on conditions and deploying DSMBs for safe boat pickup in open water."
