Site Overview

Raivavae is often described as having one of the most beautiful lagoons in the world, and its underwater environment matches the extraordinary beauty visible from above with pristine coral walls, untouched reef systems, and regular encounters with dolphins, turtles, and occasional whale sharks in the clear southern waters of the Austral Islands. The lagoon features lush coral growth that has developed undisturbed in the crystal-clear waters, creating thriving habitats for diverse marine life that behaves naturally in an environment with virtually no diving tourism pressure. Green turtles are abundant throughout the lagoon and reef system, grazing on seagrass and algae with their characteristic methodical feeding behaviour in an environment where they have experienced minimal human disturbance. Dolphin pods are regular visitors to the lagoon, their playful acrobatics and curious behaviour creating spectacular surface encounters and occasional underwater interactions that add delight to the diving experience. Grey reef sharks patrol the outer reef walls with their characteristic steady movements, their presence indicating a healthy and productive ecosystem that has remained pristine due to the extreme remoteness of Raivavae. Whale sharks make occasional appearances during the plankton-rich months, their enormous spotted bodies creating unforgettable sightings in the clear southern waters. The untouched walls feature vibrant coral communities and diverse fish assemblages that provide excellent wide-angle photographic compositions against the dramatic vertical backdrop.
