Tairapa Pass – Manihi (Tuamotu)

Site Overview

Tairapa Pass is Manihi's main ocean entrance and a productive drift diving site where tidal currents channel nutrient-rich ocean water through the barrier reef gap, creating a dynamic environment that supports an impressive diversity of marine life in the relatively uncrowded waters of this less-visited Tuamotu atoll. Grey reef sharks are consistently present throughout the pass, forming small hunting groups that patrol the deeper edges of the channel with their characteristic steady cruising movements. Napoleon wrasse are among the most charismatic residents of the pass, their massive bump-headed profiles and inquisitive nature making them one of the most photographed species as they follow divers with apparent curiosity. Schools of barracuda form dense aggregations in the current, their streamlined bodies aligned with the water flow as they wait for feeding opportunities created by the concentration of smaller fish in the pass channel. Eagle rays make regular appearances during the warmer months, their broad wings carrying them gracefully through the nutrient-rich water as they search for molluscs and crustaceans on the sandy areas. Occasional manta ray sightings at the pass entrance add an element of excitement to an already rewarding drift diving experience. The relative lack of diver traffic compared to more famous passes in the Tuamotus means that marine life at Tairapa remains naturally behaved and approachable, creating authentic encounters in an undisturbed habitat.
