Site Overview

Taotoi is a productive reef slope off the south coast of Moorea that offers excellent diving for a wide range of experience levels, featuring large table corals, frequent turtle encounters, and abundant macro life in a comfortable depth range. The reef slopes gently from shallow waters down to approximately twenty metres, creating a diverse range of habitats that support an impressive variety of marine organisms. The headline feature is the extensive table coral formations, some spanning over two metres in diameter, that create a stunning underwater landscape of flat platforms extending outward from the reef slope. These massive coral structures provide shelter for numerous fish species and create dramatic photographic subjects with their geometric patterns and impressive scale. Green turtles are frequently encountered resting on the coral platforms or grazing on algae-covered surfaces, their large shells and gentle movements making them approachable subjects for photography. Cuttlefish patrol the sandy channels between coral bommies, displaying their remarkable colour-changing abilities as they hunt and communicate with each other. Clownfish colonies thrive in the numerous anemone stations scattered throughout the reef, with multiple species displaying their distinctive colour patterns against the green and purple tentacles of their hosts. The reef slope supports a rich community of butterflyfish, angelfish, and other coral reef species that create a vibrant and colourful environment throughout the dive. Moray eels inhabit the deeper crevices and overhangs, while nudibranchs display their vivid colours on sponge and coral surfaces for attentive macro photographers to discover and document.

"Descend from the boat mooring to the reef slope where the table coral formations immediately impress with their scale and geometric beauty. Begin your exploration by following the slope downward, observing the massive table corals that create sheltered spaces underneath where juvenile fish and invertebrates find protection from predators. Green turtles are frequently encountered on or near the table corals, either resting on the flat surfaces or grazing on the algae that grows on the coral skeleton. Move slowly along the slope to maximise your chances of turtle encounters, as these gentle reptiles may be resting in unexpected locations among the coral formations. Cuttlefish patrol the sandy channels between coral bommies, and patient observation rewards divers with spectacular colour displays as these intelligent cephalopods change patterns in response to their surroundings. The clownfish colonies are scattered throughout the reef in their anemone hosts, providing colourful and active subjects for photography at almost every depth. The deeper sections of the slope feature larger coral formations and gorgonian fans that host additional species including cleaner shrimp and pygmy seahorses. As you ascend back through the shallower sections, take time to appreciate the coral garden at its most vibrant where the table corals reach their maximum size and the fish diversity is at its peak.
