Tetamanu Reef is Fakarava's premier macro diving destination, offering patient observers and underwater photographers the opportunity to discover an extraordinary diversity of small marine creatures within the protected waters of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The reef flat supports an impressive assemblage of cryptic species that have evolved remarkable camouflage strategies to avoid predators and ambush prey in the complex coral habitat that characterises healthy atoll reef systems. Pygmy seahorses are among the most sought-after subjects at Tetamanu Reef, their tiny bodies perfectly matching the gorgonian fan corals they inhabit with colouration and texture that makes them nearly invisible to untrained eyes searching the fan surface. Frogfish of various colours and sizes inhabit the coral bommies throughout the site, their remarkable camouflage and lightning-fast strike technique making them endlessly fascinating subjects for observation and photography as they wait motionless for unsuspecting prey to wander within range. Ghost pipefish drift among the coral rubble with their delicate translucent bodies, their ethereal appearance and graceful movements making them one of the most photographed subjects in the tropical marine environment. The nudibranch diversity at Tetamanu Reef is exceptional, with numerous species of colourful sea slugs crawling across the substrate in search of their preferred food sponges and bryozoans that grow abundantly on the healthy reef structures protected by the UNESCO Biosphere designation.

"Descend from the boat to the shallow reef flat and immediately slow your pace to match the scale of the cryptic creatures you are searching for among the coral bommies and rubble patches. Pygmy seahorses require patient searching on the gorgonian fan corals, their tiny bodies perfectly camouflaged against the fan surface until your trained eye detects their distinctive shape and movement. Frogfish are masters of disguise on the coral bommies, their lumpy bodies and modified fins allowing them to resemble pieces of coral or sponge until they reveal themselves with a sudden strike at passing prey. Ghost pipefish drift among the coral rubble with their delicate translucent bodies, often appearing to hover motionless before executing their graceful swimming movements. Nudibranchs are scattered throughout the site in various sizes and colours, with different species associated with different food sources that your guide can help identify and photograph. The shallow depth allows extremely long bottom times for thorough searching and careful macro photography of each subject encountered. Move slowly and deliberately to maximise your chances of spotting the most cryptic species and to avoid disturbing the delicate creatures."
