Site Overview

The Aquarium on Rangiroa is a charming shallow lagoon dive site that serves as the perfect complement to the adrenaline-fuelled pass dives for which the atoll is famous, offering divers a relaxed and colourful coral garden experience in the calm protected waters of the massive Rangiroa lagoon. The site features extensive coral bommies scattered across a sandy lagoon floor, creating a diverse underwater garden that supports an impressive variety of tropical fish species in every conceivable colour, size, and shape. Butterflyfish of multiple species patrol the coral heads in pairs, their bright patterns and distinctive markings providing constant visual interest as they feed on coral polyps and small invertebrates with their specialised elongated mouthparts. Moray eels are well-established residents throughout the site, with several large individuals occupying favourite crevices where they extend their heads to investigate the surrounding water current for scent particles from potential prey. Multiple anemonefish colonies dot the reef in vibrant patches of colour, their host anemones providing essential shelter and nursery grounds for these beloved reef residents and their developing offspring. The coral communities at The Aquarium are remarkably healthy and diverse, featuring branching staghorn corals, massive brain corals, and delicate plate formations that create complex three-dimensional habitats supporting hundreds of associated species. The site's shallow depth and calm conditions make it ideal for training dives, orientation dives for newly arrived divers, and refresher sessions before tackling the more challenging pass diving that Rangiroa is known for.

"Descend from the boat to the shallow lagoon floor where the coral bommies and their associated fish communities create an immediately engaging and colourful underwater landscape. Butterflyfish are abundant throughout the site, their bright colours and distinctive patterns providing excellent photographic subjects as they patrol their territories in pairs around the coral heads. Moray eels occupy their favourite crevices in the reef structure, with some large individuals extending well beyond their hiding places to investigate divers with apparent curiosity. Anemonefish colonies are well-developed at this site, with multiple species hosting their vibrant anemones in various colours that create beautiful macro photography opportunities. The coral bommies support diverse communities of smaller reef fish including juvenile species that use the bommies as nursery habitats in the protected lagoon environment. Green turtles visit the site regularly to graze on algae growing on the coral substrate, their gentle presence adding to the overall richness of the diving experience. The shallow depth allows extended bottom times for thorough exploration and unlimited photography sessions before a leisurely ascent among the shallowest coral formations."
